My first Acura was an Integra hatchback in the 90's, and the combination of quality, performance, and fun factor has kept me a fan of their cars ever since I drove an MDX for years, and I have had the chance, through Glenn Muller at Muller Acura, to test drive the new MDX and a standard TLX over the past year and the passion for performance remains.
So when Glenn smiled broadly when he told me how much I was going to love driving their new TLX A-Spec, I knew something special was in order.
Performance is in Acura’s DNA, and they believe it’s best achieved when the car responds instantly and instinctively to the driver. When you no longer have to think about asserting control, and instead feel it. The rush. The exhilaration. The sensation of feeling simultaneously one with the car and road. It’s what driving was meant to be. And it’s what Precision Crafted Performance is all about.
"The look of the car is much more aggressive than past models," noted Jim Evans, dealer associate at Muller Acura of Merrilliville. "They kept everything good from the existing TLX and made it better for 2018, and then added in even more with the A-Spec."
The V-6 with Advance Package that I drove, provides even more, such as 18-inch, pewter-gray, machine-finished, fifteen-spoke wheels; LED fog lights; a body-colored rear spoiler; and rectangular dual-exhaust outlets
Highlighted by new Diamond Pentagon Grille and featuring a low, wide stance that prioritizes precision handling, the aggressively redesigned TLX delivers a sporty and modern look that speaks to the exhilarating performance to be had behind the wheel.
The cockpit of the 2018 TLX includes a personal sanctuary where every performance inspired detail is deliberate and intuitive. The center stack features two display screens, one dedicated to phone, navigation, and information, and a second that is touch-friendly and controls audio and climate functions.
For me, connecting my iPhone to the car with Apple Auto Play was easy and it keeps my hands on the wheel, letting me handle everything from text messages to Spotify via voice.
Premium sport seats with contrast stitching and piping details provide ample support when cornering and comfort when cruising, while the V-6 with Advance Package delivers heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and white ambient cabin accent lighting that creates an environment for an unmatched driving experience.
While the TLX’s available 290-hp V-6 and 206-hp inline-4 definitely get it done in a straight line, the TLX was built for the corners. With innovative handling technologies such as Precision All-Wheel Steer, available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, and Agile Handling Assist, the 2018 TLX delivers a direct connection to both car and road.
Multiple Drive Modes: Econ, Normal, Sport, Sport +
Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) delivers four modes of Precision Crafted Performance. If you’re looking to raise your pulse, Sport mode dials up throttle response, increases shift points, and weights the steering to deliver a sports car–like feel while inciting a more aggressive response from the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems.
Sport+ pushes it further with even higher shift points and rev-matched downshifts to punctuate gear changes and preserve balance. For an even more engaging experience, put full manual control of either the 8-speed Dual-Clutch or 9-speed transmission at your fingertips with race-inspired Sequential SportShift paddle shift.
For me using paddle shifters for the first time was a breeze, and the sport + mode and the Acura handling systems gave me the feel of driving a race car with all the comfort of a first class sedan. Sprinting right off the line, cornering like you own the road, tech that connects me seamlessly through voice controls, and knowing the quality that Acura puts into everything they make, left me wanting to keep on driving well beyond the test.
