Valparaiso University Students and Alumni Receive Local, National Fellowships


rot1The Institute for Leadership and Service at Valparaiso University has selected 22 Valpo students and recent alumni for Calling and Purpose in Society (CAPS) Fellowships during summer 2019. Recipients are selected from a competitive pool of applicants and will complete internships with organizations dedicated to service and leadership for eight to 10 weeks during the summer. The CAPS Fellows Program helps Valpo students develop their sense of Calling and Purpose in Society through intensive experiential-learning opportunities accompanied by significant reflection. The 2019 CAPS Fellows are:

Hebron High School Students learn to fill the community's "Empty Bowls"


Hebron-High-SchoolHebron High School hosted the Tenth Annual Empty Bowls. The event featured live music, a silent auction, and a soup dinner to benefit the Hebron Country food pantry. All together, the school raised $3000. Hebron Art teacher Karen Jania spearheads this event with her students to bring attention to the threat of homelessness and hunger facing so many in our area. Jania earned an extra $500 by applying for and receiving a service learning grant in the Spreading Smiles Contest to help fund this event.

Liz Guzman-Arredondo of Calumet College of St. Joseph grows her calling

One of the eldest children in a blended family of 12 siblings, Liz Guzman-Arredondo, M.S.W., L.S.W., still remembers the moment she realized she wanted to be a professional helper. Growing up, she had the extra responsibility of caring for her many younger siblings. In truth, she said, she was forced to grow up a little before her time. One day, a social worker came to speak with a young family member who had had a baby. The impact the social worker’s guidance had on the young woman’s stress did not escape Guzman-Arredondo’s notice.
