As the weather warms up, Hoosiers are looking forward to summer cookouts, vacations and pool parties. The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter invites local residents to add one more summer activity to their list: a fundraiser for “The Longest Day.” On or around Friday, June 21 – the summer solstice – participants can turn an activity they are passionate about into a fundraiser to fight Alzheimer’s disease.
Participants across Indiana and around the world will host an event or choose an activity — biking, hiking, playing bridge, swimming, knitting and more — to shine a light on the 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and the more than 16 million family members and friends providing care and support. In Indiana alone, there are more than 110,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease. Another 340,000 are serving as unpaid caregivers.
In 2018, the Greater Indiana Chapter raised more than $250,000 through The Longest Day.
“All of our services are free of charge, and fundraisers such as The Longest Day make that possible,” said Laura Zabel, manager of The Longest Day for the Greater Indiana Chapter. “A donation of $250 supports a care consultant visit with a family for individualized support and care planning. The Longest Day is a great opportunity for anyone who has been affected by this disease to honor those they love and help others who are going through the experience.”
Greater Indiana Chapter staff are available to help guide those who are new to the program or unsure how to get started. Anyone interested can sign up for one-on-one coaching calls by clicking here. From now through May 10, new registrants will receive a free phone card holder.
