All Porter County residents will be able use the Portage Street Department, 2303 Hamstrom Rd., to drop off yard waste and pick up compost and mulch starting Monday, thanks to an intergovernmental agreement with Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction.
“This additional service provided between the city and the district gives residents in north Porter County a convenient way to manage their yard waste,” said Therese Haller, Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction executive director.
Residents can bring organics, such as leaves; garden and household plants; limbs, logs, firewood, brush, and branches no longer than 6 ft. and no bigger than 12 inches in diameter; and once live holiday home decorations, including pumpkins, corn, gourds, mums and Christmas trees. Grass clippings will only be accepted from Portage city residents.
From March 26 through April 27, the street department will be accessible from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; from April 30 through Nov. 3, the site will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Access hours and holiday closings will be listed on www.PorterCountyRecycling.org.
