1st Grader Receives Community Service Award from Police Chief


Today, May 13, 2009, Chief of Police Michael Brickner and numerous other officers visited Bailey Elementary School in Chesterton to present a Community Service Award to a first grader.

On April 21st of this year, Rosie Portelli was home alone with her mother when she learned her mother needed immediate medical treatment. Rosie’s mother had passed out and Rosie, who has a hearing impairment, dialed 911 to get help for her mother. Valparaiso Police Officers were dispatched to the scene and were uncertain of the problem due to the communication difficulties. Rebuilding Together


Every year in all 50 states, over a million people come together to rehabilitate homes that have come under disrepair. This project is called Rebuilding Together, and Valparaiso has had an active chapter since 1990. Usually the houses that are chosen for repair belong to those who cannot repair the houses themselves because of physical or economic limitations.
