Pulaski County and Northern Indiana Power from the Past Inc. Lights Up the Past at the 41st Annual Power Weekend
The amount of history embedded in and around Northwest Indiana is easy to forget thanks to our proximity to Chicago– but some organizations, like Northern Indiana Power from the Past Inc., are dedicated to preserving and highlighting the people and machines that helped make Indiana what it is today. This weekend, Power from the Past hosted their annual Power Weekend at Winamac Town Park, a small peninsula nestled in by Pulaski County’s Tippecanoe River.
The most coveted trophy in sports, the iconic Stanley Cup, is coming to Valparaiso’s William E. Urschel Pavilion, Thursday, July 26; 4:00-6:00 p.m. Washington Capitals head coach Todd Reirden, who called Valparaiso home for more than a decade, and wife Shelby, a Valparaiso High School graduate, will be bringing the cup back to the area to celebrate the Capitals’ first NHL Championship.
More than two dozen junior golfers age 12 and under participated in the Creekside Classic for Kids Skills competition on July 19 at Creekside Golf Course and Training Center in Valparaiso. Juniors competed in six skill areas and the winners were:
Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr., Hammond Parks and Recreation Department, 6th District Councilman Scott Rakos, 5th District Councilman Dave Woerpel and Hammond Board of Park Commissioners began the enhancement to Hessville Park today with a groundbreaking ceremony.
While we were disappointed that the fireworks show did not happen as scheduled on July 4th, we were very thankful that City Parks, Police and Fire Staff worked together to make the right call and helped evacuate the site when severe storm warnings were issued. Our community was extraordinary in its response and as a result all persons were safe before the storms hit the area.
After months of strenuous work and constant planning, the Valpo Parks Foundation opened Samardzija Field at Tower Park. The Valpo community came together on Friday to honor the field that Jeff Samardzija, a professional pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, his family members, and other stakeholders in the Valpo community broke ground on in the fall of 2017. After the ribbon cutting ceremony, Valpo’s youth players took to the field for the first time.
The Valpo Parks is ready for summer and registration for its Discovery Day Camp is now open. The first week of summer camp, which is held at the 122-acre Rogers-Lakewood Park, begins June 4. The camp consists of nine weeks of day camps and are available for boys and girls, preschool thru entering ninth grade, and are divided into age-appropriate groups.
The Valpo Parks Department is pleased to announce the “Go Baby” Performance Stage is available for rentals this season. “Thanks to Stewart McMillan and the Task Force Tip’s hard-working staff, the stage has been repaired and is available for rentals after being non-operational since the fall of 2017,” said Valpo Parks Director John Seibert.
Whiting and Robertsdale businesses will have an exciting opportunity this summer! Starting May 28th, the City of Whiting will have Pop Ups in the Park, a chance for area businesses to set up shop along the beautiful lakefront and sell their goods to the community.
The Valpo Parks and Valparaiso Pathways Committee invites community members to celebrate National Bike to Work Week by pedaling to work during the week of May 14-18. Community members are also invited to a Bike to Work Event from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18th at Central Park Plaza in downtown Valparaiso. The event will include a free bicycle check by Leo’s Mobile Bicycle Service, the opportunity to test ride a Valpo Velocity bikeshare bicycle, the chance to win fun prizes, refreshments and more!
On Thursday evening, the Valpo Parks Foundation held their 10th Annual Friends and Legends Celebration at the Butterfield Family Pavilion. The event honored Valparaiso individuals and one family for their dedicated volunteerism, contributions, and leadership, but the event also focused wholeheartedly on a promising future.
