Union Carpenter Apprentices Lend a Hand to NILEA

From December 11 through 18, Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters (IKORCC) apprentices assisted the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (NILEA) in removing and replacing wall lockers with wood framing and drywall.

Apprentices from Local Unions 599 and 1005 volunteered their time and skills to this project, which doubled as a hands-on educational experience.

NILEA provides in-service training programs to future law enforcement officers throughout Northwest Indiana.

“Tearing out old metal lockers, framing and building stud walls and hanging drywall are a bit outside of our ‘police training’ expertise, but the apprentice volunteers handled it quite easily and did a great job of keeping our workplace very neat!” said Patrick Murray, NILEA Executive Director. “The police academy is a not-for-profit with limited funding. The IKORCC’s contribution of labor was a blessing for our continued operation. This project is a continuation of our efforts to provide professional training for police officers in a professional training environment, and they have helped that effort considerably.”

“It’s great that the apprentices were able to help out NILEA while expanding their skills with a hands-on educational experience,” said Dale Newlin, IKORCC Senior Representative. “We are very grateful and proud of our law enforcement officers in Northwest Indiana, and we were really pleased to have the opportunity to give back and say thank you for everything they do to keep our communities safe.”
