Blackbird Cafe makes a point to showcase artwork by local artists whenever possible. Anyone who visits the cafe knows that the artwork changes periodically, giving another artist the opportunity to display their best pieces. The month of October will be no different as Joseph Gonzalez brings his work in to grace the walls of Blackbird Cafe.
Local artists are important to support according to Blackbird Owner, Dan Cook. He believes that incorporating art into everyday life and businesses is an important part of bringing the community together.
“We believe that there is a critical mass of creative people in Valparaiso needing a space to have their work seen. Our hope is to bring more people out to these events to invigorate our community,” said Cook.
As one of those local artists, Gonzalez is excited to have his work going up on display. His career boasts a variety of talents, but he currently serves as the Art Director at +WeCreate Media, Owner of Blackbean Photography, Creator at MiracleTwentyOne, and more! Perhaps one of his more intriguing accomplishments is his artwork displayed on the utility box at the corner of Franklin Street and Lincolnway in Valparaiso. Past accomplishments aside, he is still excited for the opportunity to display his work.
"I'm thankful for the opportunity to show my artwork at Blackbird because they are a great company with strong values. I'm also happy that they provide a space for artists to show their work, it adds a lot to the creative community of the Region. I wish more businesses across Northwest Indiana would let artist show their work,” said Gonzalez.
Integrating artist work into local businesses is integral to Cook, who believes it can enhance the quality of life for residents. Artists bring a different point of view to communities and provide many opportunities for people to connect.
“The creatives: artists, architects and designers are the people that shape our world. Too often art is taken out of the everyday context and placed in a museum or gallery away from our everyday lives. The blackbird cafe´ has a mission to place art in our everyday surroundings and encourage the social interaction between artists and people that do other work,” said Cook.
For a chance to see that encouragement in action, head to Blackbird Cafe and view Gonzalez’s work. For the opportunity to meet the artist and ask questions, don’t miss the Artist Reception on September 30th!
