Lunch with Santa

For the past twenty years, Wheeler has made a point to help the Union Township community during the holiday season. The Lunch with Santa program was adapted by guidance counselor Mike Rosta twenty years ago when he heard the community program would be seeing its last year.

Although Rosta had only volunteered with the program for one year, he took it upon himself to keep the program alive.

At first, the program helped around twenty-five children in Union Township. This year, the program is projected to help over two hundred children and eighty-two families. Lunch with Santa takes place on Saturday 22nd this year. All the families will be able to enjoy a turkey and ham lunch. Santa will then come for the children, and each family will separately visit with Santa to receive their food baskets, clothes,...

Trotting on Turkey Day Down Turkey Lane

The alarm sounds. The light is turned on. Grunts can be heard as one hobbles to the bathroom. Cereal is eaten too early in the morning. The car door unlocks as runners pile in and make their way to Valparaiso High School when the weather is brisk and damp and the sun is still down.

It is the morning of Thanksgiving, and over 3,000 participants began to file in a line to check-in, grab their pins and tags, and stretch as 8:00 quickly approaches. 7:45 and the runners, joggers, and walkers began to brave the cold as they line up at the start/finish line. Teeth chattered and cheeks had become rosy with every bone-chilling minute spent outside.

On your marks. Get set. Pop. 3,090 participants began to stampede the streets of Valparaiso as they faced a 5k...

#1StudentNWI: Boone Grove Prepares for Upcoming Madrigals and Reflects on Field Trips, Star Students, and Resourceful Teachers

What Has Happened? : Hamiltonbg1HAMILTON

This past month, Boone Grove High Schools journalism class in its inaugural year traveled to CIBC Theater in Chicago to see the musical Hamilton: An American Musical.

Thanks to a generous local business donation, the class of over twenty students spent the day in the city wrapping up the “American Revolution and Journalism” unit they had just completed.

Students came in for a normal day of class when they were surprised with the news. Sophomore Catrina DeLeon was one of the lucky students.

“I’ve wanted to see if for two years, and the fact that this opportunity was so easily given to us, I’ll forever be grateful.”, said DeLeon.

She is also active in BGHS theatre and took notice saying, “The play had a mix of everything from romance and comedy and all the...

#1StudentNWI: Chesterton Takes Off the Holiday Season

What Has Happened2018Chesterton2

Chesterton High School hosted their musical on Friday November 16th, Saturday November 17th, and Sunday November 18th. The musical, The Sound of Music, told the beloved story of nun Maria becoming a governess to the von Trapp family. The musical had a fun cast with Rebecca Lane as Maria, Daniel Schmiegel as Captain von Trapp, and Isabelle Maddex as Liesel.

With every new school year bringing a new musical to perform, many ponder how these musicals are selected.

“The Sound of Music will allow a lot of students to participate” Choral teacher and musical director Kristen Morris said, “It’ll bring the community in to see the students’ talents.”

The cast showed ecstatic energy about the show.

“I hope this experience will help me grow as a performer as well as a...

#1StudentNWI: Westville Celebrates Veterans and Anticipates Thanksgiving

2018NovWestvilleStudent1

What’s Recently Happened?

With the school year finally underway, students and staff have finally gotten comfortable with the routine. Recently, students and parents sat down with teachers for parent teacher conference night. The night was helpful for parents, especially if they have any questions or concerns regarding their student. It was a great night for parents to chat with the teachers.

As the first quarter of the year just ended, students now only have three quarters left to go until the end of another school year. Most recently, Westville celebrated Veterans at their Veterans Day program, honoring those past and present for serving our country. All students, grades K-12, experienced and participated in the program.

A wonderful presentation was put on by the Westville High School...
