Friday afternoon at Muller Acura of Merrillville, employees and customers alike braved the frigid cold to give blood at the Red Cross Blood Mobile parked in front of the picturesque dealership. This is not the first time that Muller Acura has hosted the Blood Mobile at the dealership to aid them in their life saving mission.
“We’ve done this in the past, and we’re proud to have the Red Cross out here again,” said Olga Vicari, Sales Manager at Muller. “It’s really a great opportunity to give back to the community and help out and really be a part of something good.”
The dedication to community outreach and involvement by Muller is not merely hosting the blood mobile alone, employees are also donating their blood to the cause as well. Several employees were waiting in line for the bus to open up at noon so they too could contribute to the blood drive they were hosting.
“It’s a good thing to be supporting the community, as a member of the community. I work here, I live here, my kids grew up here, it’s just a good thing to be out here helping out,” said Business Manager, Steve Schultz who donated that day. “I’m sure with some of the disasters and events that have occurred within our borders recently, that it’s a necessity to give blood and help out.”
Customers and passersby came through to give blood as well, trying to help in whatever way they could, including blood bank worker, Rudy Banzon who found a timeslot that would allow him to give at Muller Acura.
“I work at the blood bank in St. John doing testing and making sure blood is compatible for patients, and I’m O- blood type, which is universal donor so they’re always in need. It’s a nice way to give support,” said Banzon.
This attitude of giving has long been a part of the Merrillville dealership whose owner, Glenn Muller, is proud to lend a helping hand to a variety of organizations in the Region and beyond. In the past, one such organization was the Jason McKie Foundation, which was founded by the former Bears football player to help veterans and their families by providing scholarships for military dependents of injured parents. The Foundation assists in providing medical and financial bills for these military families, with one veteran recently sending a letter to Muller Acura.
“There was a letter from a man in Michigan who was seeking treatment for PTSD in Chicago and needed help covering his expenses for treatment while his family was gone, and we were happy to help with that organization,” said Schultz.
Whether it is a community blood drive or another event aiding Northwest Indiana, Muller Acura has shown that business is about more than simply making money, it is about making connections in the community and supporting the community they live in.
