VHS Tabs Gray as New Girls Varsity Basketball Coach


Former VHS and VU student-athlete Jeanette Gray will take over the coaching reigns for the VHS Girls Varsity Basketball program this year. She is coming over from Highland High School, and will teach business class along side her coaching duties.

Gray was a star for the Vikings and was named as an Indiana All-Star in 1999. She was just announced as a member of the 2010 VHS Hall of Fame Class as well. She went on to play for Valparaiso University, putting together a great college career that culminated in the 2002-2003 VU Athlete of the Year award. VHS Places First at Regional Track Meet


Valparaiso Indiana Track It was a chilly, cloudy afternoon, but Valparaiso High School overcame the less-than-stellar conditions and defeated Merrillville 80-76 on Thursday at the Regional level of the Track & Field state tournament. VHS placed first in a pool of 35 area schools, though there was only two schools toward the top of the day's standings. Valpo Wins the DAC Crown as Malone Sets New Pole Vault Record


Valparaiso Pole VaultingThe Valparaiso Track and Field team won the Duneland Athletic Championship at Crown Point High School Thursday, defeated the defending champion Merrillville Pirates 154.5-120. The Viking win was highlighted by pole vaulter Nate Malone, who cleared 15 feet 1 inch on Thursday at the DAC Championships. For Malone, this is his third DAC title in a row in the pole vault event, while not only achieving a personal best, but a new Valpo record. The old record was held by Kyle Klein and Frank Wilson at 15 feet flat. Malone also holds the Valpo Indoor record at 14'1". Read more



VHS Mens Basketball Regional Matchup vs. Elkhart Memorial High School


Today, we are blog-casting (I just made that up) from the track surrounding the Michigan City High School Gymnasium. The state's #8 Valpo Vikings are playing EMHS is the first round of the Michigan City Regional. The crowd is pretty divided into red and green. Apparently Munster defeated Mishawaka in the early game this morning. So the winner of this game will play Munster at 7:30 tonight CT.

11:45 - Valpo wins the tip off. Valpo's defense this year has really been stellar, and the refs not calling so far sets the tone that they will let the kids play today.

National Football Federation Adopts New Horse Collar Tackle Regulation


Horse Collar Tackles Now Illegal

INDIANAPOLIS — The horse-collar tackle has been added to the list of illegal personal contact fouls in high school football.

This addition to Rule 9-4-3 was one of 10 rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its January 24-25 meeting in Indianapolis. The rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

National Soccer Federation Adopts New Shin Guard Rule


New Rule Requires Organization's Approval on All Shin Guards

INDIANAPOLIS | In an ongoing focus on risk minimization in high school soccer, an addition to the shinguard policy has been approved.
A year after requiring shinguards to meet National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) standards, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Soccer Rules Committee will now require the front of the shinguard to be permanently marked with the NOCSAE seal and height range, effective in fall 2012.
