The Valparaiso University women’s golf team will host the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Championship, becoming the first Crusader team to host a conference championship event since the University joined the MVC on July 1, 2017.

The Gary SouthShore RailCats 2018 season is now underway. Game after game is lined up with rivals such as the Chicago Dogs facing off with the RailCats, but there are a ton of other events that will draw crowds out to the field this summer!
After sending three student-athletes to the 2018 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships back in March, the Calumet College of St. Joseph squad will send two more to represent their ranks. This time however, it will be in a much more pleasant climate. Both Olivia Askew (SR/Munster, Ind.) and Demetrius Banks (JR/Hazelcrest, Ill.) will set sail for Gulf Shores, Ala. early tomorrow morning to start preparations for their individual events at the 2018 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships taking place this Thursday through Saturday.
The Valparaiso girls’ tennis team won the Culver Invite Friday with first round win over Ft Wayne Bishop Luers 4-1 and a finals win over Culver Academies 3-2. Alexis Orlich was 1-1, AK Flude 2-0, Julie Wappel 2-0, Ema Gilliana and Keeley Evans 1-1, Grace Healy and Aleah Ferngren 1-0 and Grace Healy and Ainsley Grabarek were 0-1. On Monday, the tennis team lost to Munster 5-0. The JV did win six of eleven matches. The girls’ played in the Portage IHSAA Sectional this week defeating the host Indians 5-0 on Tuesday and defeating Wheeler 5-0 on Wednesday to play in the championship game last night against Chesterton. They defeated the Trojans 4-1 to win the Sectional. Congratulations! They will play Penn in the LaPorte Regional on Tuesday, May 22.
Carrying a six game losing streak into this afternoon, and with playoff hopes still up in the air, the Calumet College of St. Joseph softball team had just one goal: win for the seniors. The Crimson Wave said goodbye to their seven seniors on a chilly Northwest Indiana afternoon, playing their last two games of the regular season against Indiana Tech.
Valparaiso University sophomore Brandon Ancona (Belvidere, Ill. / Rockford Christian) was recognized for his excellence both on the courts and in the classroom on Wednesday as he was named to the Summit Academic All-League Team.
The girls’ tennis team defeated 19th ranked Penn on Friday 3-2. #1 singles Alexis Orlich, #2 singles AK Flude, and #3 singles Julie Wappel were are victorious. The JV won 4-3. They lost to conference rival Chesterton on Monday 3-2. #3 singles Julie Wappel and #1 doubles Ema Gilliana and Keeley Evans were victorious. The JV lost 6-5. They defeated Lake Central 4-1 on Tuesday. #1 Alexis Orlich, #2 AK Flude, #3 singles Julie Wappel, and #1 doubles Ema Gilliana and Keeley Evans were all victorious. They defeated Merrillville 5-0 on Thursday. Alexis Orlich, AK Flude, Julie Wappel, Keeley Evans, Ema Gilliana, Ainsley Grabarek, and Grace Healy were all victorious. The JV won 10-3. The Varsity is now 10-3 and the JV is 12-3.
While the 2018 season didn't end the way the Calumet College of St. Joseph softball team wanted it to, it's not all bad news. The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced their regular season award winners on Thursday evening, with outgoing seniors Joanna Drew (SR/Warrenville, Ill.) and Geena Locicero (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.) both making second team all-conference.
Next Up in Crusader Softball: The Valparaiso University softball team heads to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for the first time this week, as the Crusaders travel to Des Moines for the postseason event. The fourth seed, Valpo needs three victories to capture the single-elimination tournament and claim the conference championship in its first season of MVC play.
The boys’ golf teams hosted golf tournaments at the Valparaiso Country Club this past Saturday. The Varsity was victorious defeating Penn, Granger Christian, Elkhart Memorial and Michigan City. Andrew Karr was medalist with a 77. Mark Civanich finished second and Michael Smith third. The JV team placed second in their invitational. On Tuesday, they hosted Morgan Township and South Central at Forest Park. The Vikings were victorious on both the Varsity and JV levels. Hayden Dickerson, Trent Risetter, and Ben Kroeger led the way in the Varsity match finishing first, second, and third respectively. On Tuesday they defeated conference foes Lake Central and Michigan City at Forest Park. Michael Smith took medalist honors with a 39 and Mark Civanich and Zach Holmes tied for second with a 40.
