The Gary SouthShore Railcats announced the signing of outfielder Raymond Jones before Saturday’s game vs. the Kansas City T-Bones. In order to make room for Jones on the 23-man active roster, the RailCats placed outfielder John Price Jr. on the Inactive List retroactive to Thursday, May 30.
Two inning-ending double plays with the bases loaded and a season-high eight walks issued by the RailCats pitching was too much for Gary to overcome in a 4-2 series-opening loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday night at Shaw Park. Gary never led on the evening and is now 1-3 in the opening game of a series.

Suspense was high at Chesterton High School Tuesday evening as the IHSAA Regional Championship game took place between the Chesterton and Crown Point softball teams. The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced the signing of Eric Morell on Friday. The right-handed pitcher is active for tonight’s game and getting the start on the hill in the first game of a weekend series vs the Sioux Falls Canaries.
Morell signed his first professional baseball contract with the Tucson Saguaros of the PECOS League in 2017. In his first year with the club he made 10 starts, including a complete game shutout, and finished with a record of 7-0 and a 4.09 ERA. From 6/24 to 7/18 he made five straight quality starts and recorded a total of eight quality starts on the season.

It’s been a long season of intense training and preparation for the region’s high school softball teams. Athletes from all around the area have put in countless hours of practice and drills, hoping to have their best performances when they took to the field at the IHSAA Sectional Championships.
The Chesterton Trojans defeated the Portage Indians 14 - 2 at Chesterton High School on Wednesday evening. Fans of both teams gathered around the softball field. Some stood in the areas around the edge of the field, made muddy from the previous day’s rain. While the area surrounding the field was mucky, the softball diamond was dry and ready for some postseason action.
After shutting out Sioux City, 7-0, in the home opener on Tuesday night at U.S. Steel Yard, the Explorers turned the tables on the RailCats with a 2-0 shutout over Gary on Wednesday. Gary’s (2-3) best chance of scoring came in the bottom of the first when the ‘Cats had the bases loaded with one out but recorded back-to-back flyouts to end the inning.
