The Valparaiso University women’s soccer team has added another standout class to its program, as head coach John Marovich announced on Friday that seven future Crusaders have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Valpo program as freshmen for the 2018 season.
Having just played a doubleheader against IU-Kokomo this past Thursday, the Crimson Wave headed back down state to take on the Cougars for two more. Unfortunately, the results were no better, as the Indiana University satellite school swept the Crimson and Gray once again, 9-2 and 14-1, on Sunday afternoon at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
We want to welcome a brand new readership to the Viking Sports Report. From August 2017 until now this weekly summary of VHS athletic events had been published to VCS staff only on Friday mornings. With this edition we are including all of our VCS families. The purpose of the Viking Sports Report is to provide a weekly summary of the multitude of athletic events our freshmen through varsity teams compete in. Additionally, we include a calendar of events for the upcoming week. We hope you enjoy reading about the successes of our VHS student-athletes.
The third time was unfortunately the charm. The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's basketball team welcomed Holy Cross College to the Rittenmeyer for the second time in five days, having defeated HCC 64-61 on Saturday afternoon. But it would be the Saints that would come away victorious in this one, converting on 24 of 33 free throws and using suffocating defense, to lock down the victory 88-73.
VHS girls’ basketball senior Ari Gerdt has received an invitation from Hoosier Basketball Magazine to attend their Top 60 workout. This is the selection showcase for the Indiana All Star team. Congratulations Ari and best of luck!
The Valparaiso University men’s basketball team went toe-to-toe with a Loyola squad which entered the game atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings on Wednesday evening in Chicago, but the Crusaders were unable to get over the hump in the late stages of the game, eventually falling to the Ramblers by an 80-71 final.
Still looking for their first win of the young season, the Calumet College of St. Joseph men's volleyball headed back into action after a weeklong break this evening, taking on Saint Xavier University. The Cougars pounced as soon as the first serve went up however, handily defeating the Wave 3-0 (14-25, 15-25, 17-25) Tuesday night in Chicago.
The girls’ swim team competed in the IHSAA Sectional on Saturday at LaPorte High School. Jackie Bontrager made the state cut in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.21! Her third place 100 freestyle was very close to getting called down as well. Lizzie Simac broke a 19 year old school record in the 200 IM going a time of 2:08.98. Her time also earned her a call down to the state meet in that event. Her next individual event was the 100 breaststroke, where not only did she win the event but also broke her own school record and broke the sectional record with a time of 1:03.78! She is currently seeded 4th in this event at state. The 400 freestyle relay of Grace Cobble, Shannon McCall, Hannah Shepherd, and Jackie Bontrager went a time of 3:39.51 which earned them a call down to state as well.
